According to the rumor, the device can play titles locally without the need for an active Internet connection, making it a true handheld console and not just a remote-play device. Sony’s new handheld is reportedly “years away” from launch, according to people familiar with its development. The source also warned that Sony may shut down the project before it reaches the market as it is still in the early days of development.
Gaming handhelds have seen a recent resurgence with the success of the Nintendo Switch line and the recent wave of devices like the Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ele.
