Apple releases a new iOS operating system update for its iPhone every year, bringing along new features, performance enhancements, and security patches. This year, we are eagerly awaiting iOS 18, which is expected to be announced at WWDC 2024. Let’s take a look at some of the features we’d like to see in iOS 18.

Better Lock Screen Customization:

While previous iOS updates have provided some degree of customization options for the lock screen, there’s still room for improvement. In iOS 18, we hope to see more extensive lock screen customization, including:

  • Expanded widget selection, allowing widgets from third-party apps like weather, calendar, and stock tickers.
  • Ability to customize lock screen shortcuts for quick access to any app.

Pro Camera App:

While the iPhone camera has always been excellent, there’s a lack of features for pro users. In iOS 18, we would love to see a pro camera app that enables:

  1. More controls in manual mode, such as shutter speed, ISO, and white balance adjustments.
  2. RAW photo capture and editing capabilities.
  3. Pro video recording features like log profiles and frame rate control.

Improved Standby Mode:

The standby mode introduced in iOS 17 is an interesting feature, but there’s room for improvement. We want to see:

  • Preview of messages and email notifications in standby mode.
  • Integration of home automation controls into standby mode.

More Functionality in Widgets:

While iOS 17 brought significant improvements to widgets, there’s still more that can be done. We want widgets to become even more interactive, allowing us to perform actions directly from them. For example:

  • Viewing weather forecasts directly from the weather widget.
  • Creating or editing calendar events from the calendar widget.

Ability to Sideload Apps:

This is a feature that iPhone users have been requesting for a long time. On Android, users can install apps from sources other than the Google Play Store. On iOS, this isn’t possible, which is good for security but limits users to the Apple App Store only. In iOS 18, we hope to see the ability to sideload apps with some security measures in place, such as an “Sideloaded Apps Whitelist” curated by Apple to ensure only trustworthy apps are allowed.

Other Features:

In addition to the above features, we’d like to see:

  • Better multitasking capabilities, similar to those on the iPad, such as Split View and Slide Over.
  • Always on display like the Apple Watch, showing time, notifications, and other information.
  • Improved battery life through battery optimization and better power management features.

Conclusion:

iOS 18 has the potential to introduce several new features. We’ve listed some features we’d like to see in iOS 18, and it’ll be interesting to see what Apple has in store for us this year.
