Mac mini gets revamped design, M4 chips

Apple has expanded its lineup of Macs with the launch of the new M4 Mac mini, marking it as the direct successor to last year’s M2 model. Here are the key features and configurations of the new Mac mini:

Design and Build

  • Size: Apple has introduced a revamped “ultracompact design” similar in concept to the Mac Studio but with a significantly smaller footprint—each side measures just 12.7cm (5 inches).
  • Height: The new Mac mini stands a bit taller than its predecessor at 5cm.
  • Weight: The M4 model weighs 670 grams, while the M4 Pro version is slightly heavier at 730 grams.

I/O and Connectivity

The Mac mini offers a rich set of ports:

  • Front Ports: 2x USB-C ports and a headphone jack.
  • Back Ports:
    • 3x Thunderbolt ports (Thunderbolt 4 for the M4 model, Thunderbolt 5 for the M4 Pro),
    • 1x HDMI port,
    • 1x Gigabit Ethernet port (upgradable to 10Gb),
    • Power-in connector.
  • Wireless: The mini supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Chip and Performance

  • M4 Chip: The base M4 model includes a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU.
  • M4 Pro: Available in two configurations:
    • 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU in the base model.
    • 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU with a $200 upgrade.

Memory and Storage

  • Memory: Configurable up to 64GB of unified memory.
  • Storage: The higher-end M4 Pro trim can be configured with up to 8TB of storage.

Software

The new Mac mini ships with macOS Sequoia and integrates with Apple Intelligence.

Pricing and Availability

  • M4 Model:
    • Starts at $599 with 16GB memory and 256GB storage.
    • Other options include 512GB storage for $799 and 24GB/512GB for $999.
  • M4 Pro Model:
    • Starts at $1,399 with 24GB of unified memory and 512GB storage.
    • Available for pre-order, with deliveries beginning on November 8.
