Sony PS5 Pro 1

Sony has rolled out the PS5 Pro globally after an announcement in September this year. It is touted to be the most advanced console to date and packs some key upgrades compared to the standard and slim variants of the PS5. The latest Pro model starts at $699, EUR 799, JPY 119,980 in the US, Europe, and Japanese markets respectively. Sony did not reveal the pricing and availability details of the PS5 Pro in India. The Japanese brand has now given an official statement which is unfortunately a disappointment for those hoping to get their hands on the powerful console.

PS5 Pro won’t release in India due to a regulatory hurdle

The Sony PS5 Pro comes with Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be) support for low latency, blazing fast download speeds and online experiences. It requires a 6GHz wireless band for Wi-Fi 7 to work. The TRAI has not authorised the use of 6GHz wireless band in India yet.

The regulatory hurdle is why Sony won’t bring the PS5 Pro to India for the foreseeable future. This is a setback for gamers in the country who wanted the latest and powerful console. Regardless, they will now have to wait longer. It remains to be seen when the government approves the use of 6GHz in Wi-Fi 7.

Sony has not shared an alternative launch timeline or a workaround in regions where the PS5 Pro isn’t getting released.

Alternative ways to get the PS5 Pro

With the PS5 Pro not being made officially available in India, the demand for the console in the grey market is going to increase. However, this is not recommended due to the lack of warranty. Interested customers may also purchase it from outside the country. The Japanese brand has already announced that the PS5 30th Anniversary Limited Edition console will be available in India starting November 21 at Rs 49,999.

There are many Wi-Fi 7-compatible smartphones in India including the recently released iPhone 16 series, Pixel 9 along with Wi-Fi 7 motherboards and Intel’s Lunar Lake laptops. Only Wi-Fi 6, and 6E bands work on this radio. It’s unclear why Sony can’t enable Wi-Fi 7 when the frequency is approved in the country.
