Following a recent patent discovery for a new foldable gaming handheld, Samsung is looking to further innovate the tablet segment with extendable displays. 91mobiles has exclusively spotted the patent application being filed at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). Earlier, Samsung had filed a patent for a laptop with extendable/foldable display.
Samsung tablet with extendable display
- Samsung Display Company filed for division patent The application was filed and registered on November 26, 2024.
- Externally, the Samsung tablet looks just like any other tablet with a large rectangular display on the front. But it is quite thick compared to recent tablets on the market.
- What sets it apart is that the screen/display extends beyond both the left and right sides, providing a larger viewing area.
- The tablet’s screen can automatically be fully extended during certain tasks and return to normal when the additional display area is not needed.

- To raise the screen, a motor may be present beneath the screen.
- The dimensions of the unfolded and expanded forms of the Samsung tablet aren’t very clear from the patent application or attached images.
- Schematics of the patent show the tablet from different angles, including the display being magnified from the right and left.
- One of the images shows that the tablet will have a USB Type-C port at the bottom for charging.
Like any other patent, it’s unclear whether Samsung will ever launch a tablet with an expandable display. Samsung has introduced rollable flex screens in the past for smartphones, tablets, and more.
In addition to extendable tablets, reports surfaced in September that Samsung may be the first to launch a larger 12.4-inch rollable smartphone when fully extended. It is said to come with an under-display camera on the front. Motorola demonstrated its rollable technology on a smartphone last year. It’s possible that rollable/extendable displays may soon become a reality and become commercially available.
