Xiaomi 15 Ultra Hands-on: Same Form, More Power

The Xiaomi 15 series has been unveiled for global markets, and current lineups include two models: regular Xiaomi 15 and 15 ultra. Thanks to Snapdragon 8 Elite SOC Onboard, two tools are almost identical in terms of software experience and processing power. However, the major differential camera remains.

Like its predecessor, Xiaomi 14 Ultra (Review), Xiaomi 15 Ultra contains a quad-camera setup in a large circular module that covers about half of the rear panel.

This year, Xiaomi has made a subtle adjustment for sensor placements and cutouts, which is likely to fresh aesthetics, although I am not a fan of its asymmetrical placement. A new color version also shows Xiaomi 15 Ultra more like a digital camera than a specific smartphone, which I am sure the camera enthusiast will appreciate. Fast charging support and of course, AI (Artificial Intelligence) focus on a large battery.

How do these new changes and upgrades look? Here Xiaomi 15 Ultra has one hand experience, which I found in its global program in Barcelona, Spain.

The same form, more power

To be fair, there is not much to differentiate between Xiaomi 15 Ultra and 14 Ultra depending on the design.

Both rock a familiar camera module with similar ports and button options. Xiaomi has not chosen the option of a camera slider (yet) available on the iPhone 16 series (review) and find the X8 Pro (Review). If you choose the option of exclusive photography kits for ultra model, you get physical buttons to replace the mode and zoom, which adds a layer of convenience.

Color options are also mostly the same, although Xiaomi has not provided a green leather version, which is exclusive to the Chinese market. Instead, there is a blue option with a similar aerospace-grade glass fiber and pu leather finish. This is easily my favorite from the current line of options because it provides an excellent in-hand spirit. Xiaomi says that this version is inspired by classic leika cameras, which actually seems so.

Otherwise, the new Xiaomi 15 Ultra is a heavy heavier and thicker than its predecessor. During my short time with smartphones, I found weight distribution much more thoughtful than my predecessor and the phone felt quite ergonomic for my grip. This may vary to different users, but I generally prefer the phone with a long screen. Certainly, Xiaomi may consider lowering weight in future repetitions.

All these design options can eventually take a rear seat for performance, as Xiaomi 15 Ultra Pack Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite, promises a significant boost – at least on paper. After the phone is available, we will put these claims in the test. However, based on what we have seen with Snapdragon 8 Elite in IQO 13 (review) and Realme GT 7 Pro (Review), it is safe to perform that performance will not be an issue, whether gaming, daily productivity, or for heavy multitaking.

Even Samsung’s latest S25 series showed a big jump in Qualcomm’s performance for the same chipset.

Leika magic

For the third consecutive year, Xiaomi and Leica have participated to push smartphone photography to new heights. Xiaomi emphasizes that this collaboration is spread beyond software tuning, which includes Leica Hardware – especially leica summilux lenses – to capture amazing images in various light situations with all four cameras.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra features three 50mp cameras (primary, ultra-wide and telephoto) with a new 200MP telephoto lens with 4.3x optical zoom. The primary camera retains its 1-inch-type sensor, but leaves a variable aperture instead of a certain F/1.6 aperture.

While I have yet tested the cameras well, my experience with Xiaomi 14 Ultra suggests that 15 Ultra will still not disappoint for photography. I was eager to see updates for video recording, and the new mode was not disappointing. It now supports 10-bit log recording with all four lenses, which matters a lot of material to the creators. From my early experience, Xiaomi has significantly improved video recording stability.

All shots also look amazing with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and Dolby vision support on the 6.73-inch Ltpo AMOLED screen. In my short time with a smartphone, the quad-race display offered a smooth grip and the glow was sufficient for indoor use. However, I am still waiting for OEMS to choose the option of the Galaxy S25 ultra-glare coating, at least for the “Ultra” smartphone. So far, Samsung still leads the race for the best performance experience.

What is with AI?

Xiaomi 15 Ultra comes with Android 15- Based Hyperose 2, which feels smooth and sharp than its predecessor. However, while its AI characteristics are impressive, they align with most contestants that already introduce.

For example, new features such as AI writing, speech recognition, image expansion and an eraser equipment have become common in recent smartphones. She said, Xiaomi includes image-growing equipment such as AI Magic Sky and AI film, which I use fully.

In that case, the Samsung AI is moving forward in the race, as displayed with the Galaxy S25 series. Features like audio anhansar when recording, occupying slow speed with a simple tap, or generating daily summations through the Gmail or Samsung app are my go-to tools.

Oppo O is also progressing with features like+connect+, which allows to share a comfortable image including live photos between iPhone and Oppo devices. Xiaomi, Bhi, is working to bridge the difference between its advanced Xiaomi hyper connect between Android and iOS. We will find out its ability to completely in our intensive review.

Preliminary idea

Xiaomi 15 Ultra undoubtedly seems promising with its advanced cameras and chipsets, even if it retains a familiar design. My experience with its predecessor suggests that the ‘Ultra’ model can easily give some great shots, although I was more keen to watch the video quality improvement. Xiaomi 15 Ultra addressed it with better stability, Summilux lens of Leica, and log mode for all four cameras.

Software experience also looks promising, although I hope we get to see new AI features, which have not been seen on other Xiaomi smartphones.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Xiaomi 15, will be launched in India on 11 March.
